Since the number of users obtained at this moment is very small‚ we do not publish details of this database in this book. 5 Summary In this chapter‚ we discussed the methods of palmprint acquisition‚ offline and online approaches. Before the online palmprint acquisition device is developed‚ all the palmprints are obtained offline. Offline palmprint acquisition means that the palmprint data is not directly input to the computer. Rather‚ it is first inked on paper‚ and then a scanner is used to digitize the signal and store it in a computer for further processing.
On the flat platen surface‚ there are pegs which guide the correct placement of a palm during the acquisition process. The lighting design was also improved so that the images acquired are better than the previous one. The palmprint image formed is 768 × 568 at 150 dpi. e. the image size is 384 × 284 pixels at 75 dpi. Since then‚ we started to collect our second online palmprint database‚ called PolyU-ONLINE-Palmprint-II. From the very beginning‚ we obtained palmprints in 384 × 284 at a resolution of 75 dpi.
