Feminist writers have been at the forefront of the critique of dichotomous thinking, because of their broader concern to develop new understandings of what counts as knowledge. A general criticism of dichotomous thinking is that it ‘forces ideas, persons, roles and disciplines into rigid polarities’ and thereby ‘reduces richness and complexity in the interest of logical neatness’ (Sherwin 1989, cited in Oakley 1992: xi). Oakley argues that ‘the habit of thinking in dichotomies’ puts ‘an embargo on both/sometimes-the-one, sometimes-the other, possibilities’ (1992: xi).

For Geldalof, the concept of the cyborg is useful for suggesting ways to positively redefine women’s embodied locatedness in relation to community identities and differences. In particular, Geldalof argues that the cyborg ‘is a model that refuses the binary separation into object and subject’ (2000: 349). It is a 21 cyborg key concepts Pilcher-KeyConcepts 22 19/2/04 1:13 pm Page 22 concept that encourages a ‘double focus’ or a ‘simultaneous recognition’, first, of the ways in which Woman/women can be positioned as a location from which gendered, raced and national identities are constituted.

Whether as a source of inspiration or as a target of criticism, Haraway’s concept of the cyborg has become a central reference point within a range of debates, centring around the impact of scientific, technological developments for our understandings of our selves, our bodies and our relations with organic and inorganic others. 23 See also: body, postmodernism, reproductive technologies cyborg key concepts Pilcher-KeyConcepts 24 dichotomy 19/2/04 1:13 pm Page 24 FURTHER READING Haraway’s original arguments are elaborated in her later works, including Primate Visions (1992) and Modest_Witness (1997).
