What has other discursive work revealed about communication with people with intellectual disabilities? 32 Disability and Discourse One of the first social situations that fuelled discourse analysis in this field was the research interview itself, the point at which researchers usually come face to face with people with intellectual disabilities. Sigelman et al. (1981), in the first of a series of papers, established an interactional concept that has had very wide currency in the research community ever since, namely the idea of ‘acquiescence bias’.
A social constructionist would say that these activities simply do not exist outside the talk which makes them up; they are emergent (Wetherell, 2001: 396). Every time two or more people interact they are not only enacting social activities, but also reconstructing and repackaging them. That is the sense in which Sarangi (2003) explores activity types, not as fixed, rule-governed frameworks, but as activities that literally emerge from, and are made up by, talk. It is also the stance that informs institutional CA, as mentioned above (Drew & Heritage, 1992; Heritage & Clayman, 2010), which aims to uncover the patterns of talk that typify and construct a range of work-related activities.
In Part 2, my main focus is to explore in this way how the social activity of ‘inclusive research’ emerges from both public and more private encounters. In this book, then, I am interested in talk precisely because it has the power to construct afresh what is happening whenever people communicate: Social objects are not given ‘in the world’ but constructed, negotiated, reformed, fashioned and organized by human beings in their efforts to make sense of happenings in the world. (Sarbin & Kitsuse, 1994: 3) The attraction of studying the details of real talk is that they both reflect and constitute social realities.
