Kvam (2004) undertook a retrospective survey of 1,150 adult members on the Norwegian Deaf Register and compared the findings to a similar survey of the general adult population. The findings indicate that hearing-impaired children are at significantly greater risk of becoming the victims of childhood sexual abuse than hearing children.

More recent research conducted by May-Chahal and Cawson (2005) has sought to explore the incidence of child abuse in the UK. The findings suggest that 16 per cent of the 2,869 sample of young adults reported experiencing some form of abuse. The authors conclude that child abuse remains an extensive problem in the UK. • One per cent of under 16s were sexually abused by a parent or carer • Three per cent were sexually abused by a relative • Brothers and step-brothers were most commonly the perpetrator of sexually abusive acts in intra-familial abuse (38 per cent).
