The father, a cultured and well-connected person, had invested much in his daughter and she developed wide ranging interests and good taste, expressed in the style of her well furnished apartment and her fashionable dress. However, whether due to lack of talent or insufficient application to studies, Re'uma did not advance professionally beyond being a telephone switchboard operator. She exemplifies descent from a decidedly upper middleclass background to the low middle-class stratum occupied by many blind people.
One home included the blind husband's sighted mother, who monopolized much of the homemaking, although the blind daughter-in-law was quite capable (she did beautiful crocheting), and could probably have coped with more than she actually did. However, there were also parents who encouraged their children by imparting skills and self-confidence. For such children, living at home did not constitute a threat to their independence. They did not assert themselves stressfully, and continued to live at home without overt conflict.
Not only was Re'uma employed in a well-paying private firm, as compared to most of her peers who worked in lower-salaried public institutions, but she was also the supervisor of a number of other switchboard operators in her office. At one time she was honored with a prize for excellence at work. The coincidence is notable: of all the blind switchboard operators, the one with the highest income and status at work came from an upper middle-class family. 2 Her resourceful and sensible parents had directed their child's natural abilities so as to obviate a status clash; Binyamin's parents, also an upper middle-class family, did nothing to help their son find a niche in a lower-class stratum.
