1. Stabilize shoulder seams using one of the following options. Option 1: Serge the elastic to the garment. • Cut clear elastic the length of the finished shoulder seam. • Adjust the serger for a 4-thread overlock. Keep the blade engaged. • Meet and pin shoulder edges, right sides together. Stitch several stitches. • Raise the presser foot and place the elastic under the foot, along the seamline. If the pattern allows ⅝″ (16mm) seam allowances, be sure to position the elastic over the ⅝″ (16mm) seamline.

Stretch velour qualities: • Closely cropped pile on the right side of the fabric • May contain some spandex for extra comfort and fit • Fuzzy and warm • Dyes well with fiber-reactive type dyes, which are used mostly for cellulosic fibers (plant based) such as cotton. Colors achieved with fiber-reactive dyes are brilliant and don’t fade after repeated washing. Stretch velvet Stretch velvet is soft and drapey—it combines the luxury of velvet with the comfort of a knit. This polyester/spandex blend fabric is woven as a double cloth and cut between the layers to form the velvet pile.

Align the rougher wrong side of the elastic to the wrong side of the fabric, placing the fabric cut edge at the base of the elastic fold. Don’t cut the elastic to size until you’re finished with the first stitching. 4. Apply the elastic, using a two-step method. • Stitch a presser foot width from the fabric edge. It may be necessary to hold the fabric at a slight tension, especially around curves, so the finished edge hugs the body. • Fold the elastic to the right side. Insert a stretch needle and edgestitch as close to the edge as possible.
