We begin by looking at definitions of ‘child’ and consider what it means to say that ‘child’ and ‘childhood’ are social constructions; we do so by paying attention to the historical and global contexts in which ‘child’ and ‘childhood’ are constructed.

Section 2: The ‘new’ sociology of childhood The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child not only describes the rights and protections to be offered to children under international law, but also reflects a relatively new vision of ‘the child’.
