Family play was operationalized and reliably rated for attunement or nonattunement. Families with children who had been abused showed less attuned play than their nonabused counterparts. This finding was significant in that the children who had experienced abuse continued to show disruptions in their play interactions even when their families had been supportive and they had received therapeutic attention to address the issue. Clearly more controlled outcome studies that compare families with whom interactive play is used in therapy with other forms of treatment need to be carried out to better understand how such play interventions affect family functioning.
